Luna 3
Here, I have started the painting by puting in the background first. I made the decision early on that Luna (the Jack Russell Terrier) would be the darkest and lightest thing in the painting so the background was more gray and less intense than it might normally be. I paint with a paint medium called "Walnut Alkyd Medium" made by M. Graham. See the link page for more information. Alkyd medium allows for a quick drying painting (over night) and also for a more stable, less brittle painting. It's rubbery and makes for an even sheen over the whole painting. If there are dry looking areas, that's caused by too much thinner. I thinned the paint around the letters in the sky so I could have nice crisp lines. At this point I realised that the two pink towers looked like phallic symbols and so I started planning on changing the color from pink to anything else! These towers are based on a tower about a block from my house.
