“As Lovely As the Moon”

It was a vision. I know that now. She appeared slowly like waves of heat rising off of the adobe towers at sunset. I was startled to see her and at the same time I knew she would eventually find me. There had been omens and warnings all week leading up to my meeting the Queen of the Night. On Monday, an owl flew over me while I was walking home late at night from a friend’s home. Wednesday, when I turned the blind corner, there was a silver fox by the side of the road. And, the barn swallows have been flying in the house for days. I tried to find the meaning for these events in books and in my dreams but nothing came to me. The only thing I knew for sure was that the winds of change were coming.

She stood shimmering under the crescent moon and I was blinded. She said many things to me but I don’t remember much. It was like a dream in which I only remember tiny parts of what happened. I do remember her saying that I was her messenger. She told me that I was her chosen one. She said she would appear several more times with messages of dire importance.

I was so filled with emotion that I was shaking. I had fallen to my knees and had not even noticed I was on the ground until the pain of a small pebble forced my attention down to the dirt where I brushed the pebble away. When I looked back up she was fading. I wanted to say something profound and meaningful but when I tried to speak my voice was just a whisper. I spoke in the darkness, “your face is the moon and your eyes are the stars”. I knew my life would never be ordinary again.
